Low Carbon Solutions

FlexSteel offers a comprehensive suite of pipeline products and expert technical guidance to support customers throughout the energy value chain. We specialize in addressing the dual objectives of emission reduction and operational profitability. With our extensive track record, we deliver compliance-ready solutions that are both efficient and cost-effective.

What is Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS)?

Carbon capture is an advanced technology designed to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from various sources across the energy spectrum. By capturing these emissions, operators can reduce their overall environmental footprint, while striving to achieve environmental stewardship initiatives. Leveraging tax-based incentives, these same operators can generate revenue from the capture and storage of CO2, improving the profitability of the organization.

FlexSteel pipe is designed to mitigate traditional corrosive mechanisms in CO2 pipeline transport while also allowing for supercritical operating pressures, maximizing energy density and project profitability.

A uniquely engineered annulus system captures natural permeants, creating an environmentally friendly zero-emission pipeline. FlexSteel products are ideal for:

  • Gas & Dense Phase CO2 Transportation
  • Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
  • CO2 Injection

Hydrogen

Pipelines play a crucial role in transporting hydrogen gas from production facilities to end-users, enabling clean energy distribution across industries. These pipelines are essential for integrating hydrogen into existing infrastructure, supporting diverse applications like fuel cell vehicles, industrial processes, and energy storage solutions, thereby facilitating a sustainable energy transition.

Given its relative market infancy, commercially viable hydrogen projects are very limited in the United States. However, in Europe, the hydrogen market is well established, with numerous operational projects. FlexSteel is in discussions with many of these operators while also participating in joint-industry testing programs to confirm product suitability.

In anticipation of this market growth, FlexSteel has conducted full-scale product and material testing, confirming suitability for hydrogen service.

RNG

Renewable natural gas (RNG) pipelines are essential infrastructure for transporting biogas derived from organic waste sources such as landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and agricultural residues. These pipelines facilitate the distribution of RNG to homes, businesses, and industries, providing a sustainable energy source that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports the circular economy.

Renewable natural gas (RNG) faces several challenges in pipeline service:

Quality Variability

RNG derived from different sources can vary in composition (e.g., methane content, impurities), which may not always meet pipeline specifications. The corrosion-resistant materials used in FlexSteel products ensure compatibility even in changing operating environments.

Infrastructure Compatibility

Existing natural gas pipelines are designed for fossil fuels, which differ in composition and behavior from RNG. RNG might have different properties that could impact pipeline integrity, safety, and efficiency, necessitating modifications or upgrades to infrastructure. When available, FlexSteel pipe can be slip-lined into existing infrastructure with minimal impact, greatly reduced cost, and in a matter of days.

Network Availability

In many cases, existing takeaway infrastructure is greatly limited, if non-existent. FlexSteel products can be rapidly installed with minimal construction spreads to activate miles of pipeline in short schedules to meet operational demands.
